Newest Addition

Here are some pictures of our newest addition, little Rosie!! She is such a sweetie. She eats a TON, which is surprising as she is a peanut. We got home with her on 11/18 after five grueling days in Mississippi. She is well worth it!!

Grandparents update

Hi everyone!! We spent the day today,(halloween) at Jenny's as she had Alex's entire class, along with the moms over for a halloween party. We helped run off the games and get the lunch on. There were 14 kids, AND MOMS! wHAT A HOUSEFULL. We have been spending alot of time out at Olivia lately. We are having a guy take down the barn. Last Sun. we came back to go to Pete's for a get-together for my siblings. When we got home to the farm at about 6:00 or so, the barn was collapsed. It turns out the guy was working on it and the wind was so strong it blew the barn down! The guy he had helping him broke his leg,as he was up on a ladder at the time! Anyway, we went in the house to find our power was off, and our water pump wasn't running so we just went to Redwood Falls and stayed in a motel. The next day I managed to get some of the power restored but had to have an electrician come out to get us fully up. I suppose I should explan, when the barn went down it pulled the wires off at the pole and blew fuses. Tomorrow night we are going to Lepleys for a halloween party. the little grandkids and there parents have been going there the past few years. Really looking forward to seeing everyone over the Nov. Dec. holidays. God bless you all!1

John McCain Rally

Hello all,
I went to a John McCain rally, and took a lot of pictures. It was a really good rally, probably about 1,000 people there. I left campus at 8:30 with a couple of friends we made it to the courthouse at around 10. We walked there and it was overall an adventurous day. If you want to see the pictures click on the link http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=66757&l=82a97&id=754622785 I hope the link works. If not I can always post the pictures up here.

Isabelle

Hi Jacobs clan, We received a call last night from izzy. She is in the twin cities and she thinks she can make it to the sat. lunch at our house. Since she has trouble walking she won't come to the orchard, just over for lunch. Her only problem is getting there as Kathy can't bring her. We'll work on a solution to that. Hope all is well in your respective families!

Two adorable girls!

Baby I is 5 weeks old today! What a sweet baby she is! She loves being held and cuddled. She has that wonderful new baby smell, too!

Ava loves to be mommy and daddy's little helper. She especially likes to "clean" the dishes in the sink. Hopefully, when she gets older she'll still like to do the dishes. :)

As I am writing this entry BOTH girls are napping! Wow! :)

Storm damage at Steubenville

Last night was a first. There was a wind advisory, no joke. A pine tree fell down about two feet away from the front door of my dorm. Also the street was covered in debris which consisted of leaves, and branches. it was pretty crazy. Half of the county of Steubenville lost power. The hospital in nearby Wierton, Virginia was on it's backup generators. There were down power lines, the whole bit.

Explanation of User Name

I was made aware that there was some... suprised reactions to my User Name (Remnant of Israel). I would direct you to the Book of Romans, the book right after Acts, in there around Chapter 12 I think... you will find St. Paul talking about the Remnant of Israel, i got my inspiration from that. I am not a Jewish radical with amazing hacking skills, sorry.

I found a way to get on

Hey everybody,
I found out how to get on now so i'll be posting myself. I won't need "Big Brad" to post for me anymore. Yeah i have been really busy with class, and studying during the day. Partying at night, just kidding i don't party at night just hang out with friends or night class, or work. I work at the Phonathon at Steubenville. Basically I call people for money, it's not that exciting. Hope everything is going good back home. I also have become a fan of the nap during the day. It is very nice, and i enjoy it.

Michael's College Experience

(Michael couldn't get on so dad is entering this note for him per his request.)
Hi all y'all,
Everything is going fine at Steubenville. I've made a good group of friends and I'm going to all my classes. I'm also staying with all my homework, and not getting behind. The weather has been really hot, or cloudy and rainy. I'm waiting for that middle day to come. My roommate and I get along great. I also met a guy here from Faribault MN so that was nice. We hang out occasionally. I'm able to get internet from my dorm room which is really good. Though currently it's down, so I have to go where there is wireless internet. If you want to write me the address is:
Michael Jacobs
1235 University Blvd.
PO Box 506
Steubenville, OH 43952
I also have my dorm room phone 704-283-6673, or my cell phone number. To get my cell phone number, just e-mail or call my parents and they'll give you that. I'm not going to put that up where people can see. Yeah, I've gotten 3 voice messages from people. One was a guy who I thought was drunk calling to try and get his wife back. Second was a person calling and wanting to express condolences about a guy's wife being in the hospital. The third one was for me to donate to fight cancer. I also got a call from a telemarketer wanting me to donate money. I told her it was a dorm room, and asked her to take me off her list. Speaking of telemarketing, that is my job at Steubenville. On Tuesday nights I call alumni of Steubenville to see if they will donate money to the University. I hope everything is going well for you all.
-Michael

Now, the Waiting

As of last week, we've finished all the paperwork, and we've sent our book in to New Horizons, now is the time to wait and prepare for our new baby to arrive.

We've moved Alex and Nicky into the same bedroom, and we are beginning to prepare the nursery for a girl. If everything goes well, we hope to have a child placed by the end of the year.

This Sunday - July 27th - baby Gruber #2 will be FULL TERM! Woo-hoo! I don't think I can get any bigger. Rich and I are ready to welcome this new baby. My c-section is scheduled for August 11th (yes, on Dad's b-day!) at 7:30 am. But....we have a feeling that I might go into labor before then. Either way please pray that all would go smoothly with the delivery. :)

Just Me (dad)

Hi everyone, Luke and I are here in MP as they are putting in basement carpet today. Sheila is over at Brians with Maddie, and Jenene. We are currently trying Vonage phone sysem which works off your internet, We haven't had it hooked up til today, cause we didn't have enough USB ports. We bought a plug in device, that's 3 in 1 so now we can use it. I don't think I like it however cause I'm finding out that you have to be on the computer so you can see if it pops up that you have a callk cause it doesn't have a ring! As you all know it's hard for us to have a land phone cause we are always all over the place. We have verizon internet which is real nice, because we can take it anywhere. That's why we thought vonage would work out well cause we would be able to take it with us whether here, at the farm or in NM, we would always have the same number which is a 763 number! Hope everyone has a smile today. God bless the JACOBS CLAN

Sailor News

Hi Everyone,

Haven't been on the blog for a little while. It's fun to read the new entries!
Not much new at the Jacobs Household but I wanted to share Mitch's address with everyone in case you want to write to him while he's in training.
For those of you I haven't talked to recently, Mitch left for basic training in the Navy on 6/12.
He is scheduled to graduate in the first part of August. While he's in training he's allowed to receive letters and cards. If you send him something, it must be just an ordinary card or letter. No extra stuff or musical cards, etc.. He's doing well from what we understand, but would very much like to hear from any of you that can write him. Basic training is tough and he misses home.
Here's his address. Make sure to write it exactly as I've got it written here.
SR Jacobs, Mitchell S.

Thanks Alot,

Farmington Times

Hello All,
Well I am in my 3rd week as the new Compliance Engineer here in Farmington. It has been quite busy, and I have been doing a fair amount of traveling too. I was in San Diego around the 1st, and I have some training to attend in Reno next week, then around the 9th of June I have to go to Portland, OR for another conference. Whew! After that, however, traveling for work will be finished for a while. The toughest part of the whole thing so far is having to be up here while my family is in Los Lunas.
I have been working with a mortgage broker this week to get pre-approved for a house. It looks like we will qualify for around $210k so hopefully we will be able to find something reasonable for that price. The market here is pretty high and I simply cannot grasp what drives home prices. Anyway, it will be nice to own instead of rent!
Luke and I are going on a Men's retreat to Capitan, NM up in the southern mountains the weekend after next. We are really looking forward to that! As a Dad it sure can be hard to spend as much time with your kids as you would like so I am really looking forward to the one-on-one time!
Molly saw a Pain Specialist who was able to prescribe some decent medication for her back pain and foot/hand pain. He also is going to do some shots for pain next week and have her start physical therapy to help as well. Please keep her in your prayers as she tries to beat this thing!
We love you all and will talk to you soon.

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Although it seems as though we just got here, it is already time to leave! We always have very mixed feelings at this time. We're certainly looking forward to seeing everyone at home, but we hate leaving our loved ones behind here. We need to be out by early tomorrow morning so we are going to get lots of stuff done today in preparation for that Luke and Maddie have been with us for about ten days now which has been fantastic. Luke only has a half day of school today, so, after we pick him up we're going to Arby's for lunch and then just hang out for the afternoon. They always have church services for youth on Wed. evenings, so we'll take them there and say goodbye. Their mom will pick them up. Clint is in San Diego, CA right now for a training session and his flight is coming in this evening, after she picks up Luke and Maddie, Molly is going to pick Clint up at the airport. We plan to stop over at Clint & Molly's before leaving tomorrow so that we can say goodbye to them.

We went with Luke and Maddie to Carlsbad Caverns this past weekend. It was wonderful! What an incredible sight! Clint has free motel nights coming because of all those nights he stayed in New Jersey, so he very generously got us free nights at a wonderful motel. We appreciated it very, very much. We got quite a few pictures at the caverns as well as on the way there at some historical spots.

I'm not sure exactly what time we'll leave Los Lunas tomorrow after visiting with Clint & Molly, but, at this time, we plan to be home by late Saturday afternoon or early evening. Molly is having a great deal of pain, seemingly all over her body and no one seems to know why, so please keep her in your prayers.

Take care everyone!

Home Study #3

We met on Tuesday with Karine for our last home study. We didn't quite get through all the questions and answers, but we're close enough to do the last part over the phone. At this point we have a few paperwork items to take care of, we need to finish our family book, and then we just wait for the okay from New Horizons.

We asked them not to circulate our family book until July, because we think Nicky should get a few more months to mature, and we could also use a few more months to save some money. But as we head into these final months of preparation, we want to say thanks to our families for your thoughts and prayers. We have been praying nightly for our baby to be and her mother.

Annual Cruit Family Picnic

Jenny asked me to post this message from Alyson so everybody would know the time and place of this year's family picnic.

Hi all - We are planning to meet on Saturday, May 24th, as usual, at Round Lake Park in Eden Prairie any time after 10am. The reservation goes through 3pm...we are welcome to stay beyond that time, we just need to exit the building by then. Pray for a nice, warm day!
Looking forward to a great turnout! Love, Alyson

New Mexico comments

Hi Everyone! I'm trying to post something on the blog, but I made a mistake and created a new blog! Both Joe & I thought it was posted, but then we realized our mistake, so here I go again with a fresh attempt! We really want to send pictures of our house here, some of the antiques in the house, and also our yard, etc., but we can't figure out how to do that. We'll send them at some point though, we just need some direction, I guess. We've been having a good year here. Besides having a very nice home, the weather has been wonderful. It's pretty much warm and sunny every day! It gets windy fairly often, but it's not too bad. Happily, we've seen quite a lot of Luke and Maddie, for which we're very grateful. Unfortunately, we haven't seen as much of Clint, but he's got a lot going on. He's very excited about his new job in Farmington because it's more of a regular job with regular hours, the salary is significantly higher, and it's secure. With his current position there's a continuing threat that it's going to close down and Clint didn't feel secure at all there. We went with Luke and Maddie to an historical site one day last week (they were on Easter break) of a mission from the 1600's. There were ruins of the church and surrounding buildings, etc which supported the people of that time in that community. A Fransiscan priest had started it and, later another Fransiscan priest joined him there to live among and convert the Indians. It was really interesting. The day following the mission trip we all took a train called the Rail Runner to Albequerque. The Rail Runner makes several runs per day between here and Albequerque, stopping at various small towns on the way. After arriving in Albequerque, we rode a free bus called Rapid Ride to the Aquarium and other attractions in that area. It was a lot of fun. We ate dinner at a restaurant in the Aquarium which was bordered on two sides with part of the Aquarium, so,while we ate, we could view many varieties of fish swimming around, including sharks, and some rather unusual looking turtles! We enjoyed it. Yesterday Joe and I got some wonderful news about Luke. Clint and Molly went to a conference about Luke and they learned he's getting B's in all his subjects except math where he is getting a C plus. This is mainstream classroom work, not special ed. and he's doing ninth grade work. We were overjoyed to hear that! It's a real answer to prayer! Luke and Maddie are coming to Minnesota this summer from July 15th to August 5th. Their parents are driving them to Dallas for their flight because it's so much cheaper and it's easy to get a nonstop flight. We had a very enjoyable lunch with Clint this past Tuesday and we're meeting him again tomorrow for lunch. We have to get our time in with him because he'll be leaving for Farmington and the new job which begins April 21st. Molly and Luke and Maddie will be here in Belen until Luke's school year is finished at the end of May. Well, I'd better close. We'll try to send photos soon!

Big Brad's 1st Blog

Hello Everyone,
Well, lets see if I can get this to work right this time. When I tried posting a blog earlier this week I tried to see a preview of it and lost the whole thing! I guess that's what happens when you put an old ironworker in front of a computer!
We had a great Easter. As you all know I volunteer for quite a variety of ministries at Sts Peter & Paul. I had duties at each of the Tridiuum masses/services. Mitch also sang with our KC choir at the Easter Morning mass.
Work has slowed down quite a bit for the time being. bidding is very busy however. I am fairly optimistic about the outlook in the twin Cities area this year. The union hall is nearly empty because of all the work on the new Twins and Gophers Stadiums as well as the new 35W bridge. We picked up a couple more nice jobs this week so it's looking like a busy summer for us.
Well, I'll sign off for now. Glad to hear all the good news about new jobs, adoption progress and baby Gruber!

Baby Gruber

It's hard to believe we're already at the halfway point of this pregnancy. Last night, was our 20 week ultrasound. It was great seeing the baby. :) This morning, I talked with my doctor's nurse and she confirmed that everything looked normal. :) Before we know it...August 16th will be here! Please keep baby Gruber in your prayers. Thanks!

Home Study #2

Monday night, Jenny and I met again with Karine. We spent more time going through the questions and inquiries about our family, our history, and our ideas on raising kids.

We've got one more scheduled meeting on April 15, then we should be done with the home study. At that point, there are a few last details to take care of, and then we should be ready for a referral. We wouldn't accept any referrals until mid-summer at the earliest, but from then on, a child could be placed at any time.

Good Friday Holy week

We want to wish the Jacobs clan a Very blessed Easter! The church services this week always are so meaningful. I always think it really makes you realize how much God loves us!! The spring blossoms are out on the trees and flowers here in New Mexico. All is well!

Job change is coming

Hi all,

As Mom and Dad already know, I have decided to accept the job offer I received from the City of Farmington Electric Utility for the Compliance Engineer position. This new job will increase my salary from $58k/yr. to $71k/yr., a 23% increase....not too bad! Also, there is significant advancement opportunity due to retirements within the next 3-5 years. I will be starting on April 21st, but Molly and the kids will stay in Los Lunas until the end of May so Luke can finish the school year. We are all excited!
Molly and I are going to travel to Reno, NV from April 1-4 for a conference for my new job as well. The City is paying for all my expenses so we just had to pay Molly's airfare....very nice.
We can't wait to see how the adoption turns out! We were sad to hear that you wouldn't be making a trip out this year, but it sure sounds like you guys had fun at the Dells and I am sure you want to save you can.
Well, pray for us as we make this new transition over the next couple months. Talk to you soon!

Weekend at the Dells

In anticipation of the costs of our upcoming adoption, we decided that we could not afford a spring trip to either Florida or New Mexico this year. But after Jenny did a little research on train travel, we decided that a short weekend trip to Wisconsin Dells would be a good mini-trip for the family.

Jenny, Alex, and Nicky left Friday morning from the AmTrack station in St. Paul. I went to work and drove down Friday night. Alex really enjoyed the train, but Nicky was his typical busy self, so mama spent a large part of the trip chasing him around the coach.

I'd been to the Dells only in the summer before, when it is very busy. At this time of year, it is mostly quiet because all the outdoor attractions are closed until the weather warms up. But the Atlantis, where we stayed, had a nice kids pool for Alex and Nicky to play at. They had a lot of fun—Alex especially likes to play in the water.

We drove back Sunday afternoon. A short trip, but plenty long enough for everyone to have a lot of fun!

John Weidenbach

On a Web site with information about Hennepin County history, I found this interesting little paragraph.

WEIDENBACH, John — A German settlement began in Medina in 1855 and by 1856 it had spread into Independence in the area around Lake Sarah. John Weidenbach came from Germany in 1856. His father, Michael, and the rest of his family arrived two years later. Members of the family were: Adolph, who had just completed a term as a Hussar in the German army, Matthew, Michael, Lucy (Mrs. Mathias Jacobs), Bertrude (Mrs. Wagner), and Mary (Mrs. Jordon). Adolph had his farm in Section 3. He became a teacher and Justice of the Peace.

Now in my reading of this paragraph, Michael could be the grandfather of Lucy (Joe's great-grandmother) or the father of Lucy (this is more likely).

Home Study #1

Last night Jenny and I met with Karine, our assigned social worker, for the first of three home study meetings. She drove to our house at 6:45. She showed us some sample books that couples who are adopting domestically have to assemble. Jenny and I have discussed some things we will try to do with our books that will show our family in an interesting and unique way.

After looking at the books, filling out some paperwork, and talking gernally about adoption, Karine asked us specific questions about our families and how we were raised. I thought she would spend more time looking around the house, but she took just a quick tour.

Our second home study is in two weeks, and the third is April 15. At that point, Jenny and I will try to have our family books completed, then we should be basically ready. Our timeline is that we would prefer not to adopt before July, but we hope to have a child placed before the end of the year. Although no family is guaranteed a placement, most families who are open to a child of any race would be able to adopt six to nine months after finishing the home study.

Minnesota 11th Infantry Regiment

In setting up this blog, it was my hope that family history would be something people could blog about if they learned something interesting or new. In reading part of Lawrence Jacobs's book, I learned that Jenny's great-great grandfather served in the Minnesota 11th Infantry Regiment from August 1964-July 1965. Although Lawrence calls the Jacobs who served, Michael, I'm pretty sure that it must have been Mathias (Michael's father) who served. Here's a short synopsis of that regiment's activities during the Civil War. It matches the report in Lawrence's book.

11th Regiment Infantry
Organized at Fort Snelling, Minn., August and September, 1864. Moved to Chicago, St. Louis, Mo., and Nashville, Tenn., Attached to railroad guard Louisville & Nashville Railroad, Dept. of the Cumberland, 4th Sub-District, District of Middle Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to June, 1865.

SERVICE.--Assigned to duty guarding line of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad from Nashville to the Kentucky line. Companies "E," "G" and "I" at Gallatin, Tenn.; Company "A" at Buck Lodge; Company "B" at Edgefield Junction; Company "C" at Richland; Company "D" at Sandersville; Companies "F" and "K" at--------, and Company "H" at Mitchellsville; moved to St. Paul; Mustered out June 26, 1865, and discharged at St. Paul July 11, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 3 Enlisted men killed and 1 Officer and 21 Enlisted men by disease. Total 25.

A Civil War regiment numbered about 1,000 men. It would be fun if any of us were to travel to Nashville and visit one of the aforementioned towns and imagine how Mathias Jacobs served his new country almost 150 ago.

UPDATE: I searched a Civil War database and discovered that it was definitely Mathias Jacobs who served, and he was assigned to Company F, which unfortunately, according to the information above (and in Lawrence Jacobs's book), it isn't recorded which town exactly along the railway line that he was stationed. It was probably a very small town.

New Mexico report

Hi to the Jacobs! We received some rather sad news from our good neighbors across the street from us in maple plain. They are the folks who are keeping an eye on our house while we are away. Last Wed. they were on a rriving home from a trip to Las Vegas when David complained of a headache and was throwing up. When they got into MSP they were walking to get to luggage claim when he found himself unable to keep walking! Kirsten had been sick in Las Vegas so she thought he might have what she had,so she sat him down and went for help. When she returned David was unable to talk! She called 911 and he is at Fairview Southdale. It was a stroke. He had brain surgery on sat. and they did find some dead tissue as well as the clot. Kirsten called this morning and said he was able to talk to her on the phone this mornig. They say many people die from a stroke like his. They hold out high hope for him though. Keep them in your prayers

Our Trip to Blue Earth

New Horizons adoption agency is licensed in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, therefore, Jenny, Alex, Nicky, and I found ourselves on the road to Blue Earth, in southern Minnesota for an all-day seminar on Friday night. Without Joe, Sheila, Herb, and Florence in town, we planned to stop in Northfield to pick up Emily Schmitz, who would watch the boys while Jenny and I were in the meeting. Unfortunately, the drive to Northfield was very long because of slow traffic. The wind was blowing snow over the wet roads and making them a little icy. We finally did pick up Emily, but didn't arrive at our hotel until 10:00. On the positive side, we were welcomed by the Jolly Green Giant.
Saturday was busy, and we heard from several couples who had adopted recently through New Horizons. Jenny and I would like to adopt domestically, but we are still holding out hope that Guatemala opens up soon, because that would also be an option. Emily did great with the boys--they went swimming, played in the McDonald's playland, and even did some shopping at WalMart.

Our home study begins this month, and if everything goes as planned, we should be "paper-ready" by the end of spring. At that point, we just wait for a referral.

Sunny NM

Hi All......we have been watching the weather up there in Minnesota, and wow has it been cold! We are starting to enjoy spring here, many days have been sunny and in the 60s. We are excited about the new blog, this should be an interesting way for us all to keep in touch.
Whoever does the invites to the blog should note 2 things: first, make sure the invite has something that identifies the sender as who they are and that the email is legit...I deleted the 1st one I got, thinking it was spam...also, make sure folks know they will have to sign up for a Google account to gain access.
Anyway, work and home situation is about the same as when we came there last month. I went to an interview at the Electric Utility for the City of Farmington, so we will see what happens there. Well, talk to you all soon. We love you!

First blog

Hi Jacobs clan, We are enjoying our NM stay. The weather has been warm and sunny! The area is much cleaner than it was at Farmington. We joined a bible study at San Clemente Catholic in Los Lunas, which is about 12 miles from us. The people were very freindly! There is a Catholic church in Belen where we live, and we went there the first sun. we were here, but there didn't seem to be anything going on there,as far as programs were concerned. There is of course a large mexican population here. This is Molly's hometown. We've seen where she went to school and the neighborhood she grew up in. Hope you are all doing well! Thanks Doug for setting this up. I hope the family participates!
